How hair contamination takes place : Toxins (prescribed or otherwise) are ingested. With THC (as an example) it is either trapped in protein in the plasma (then taken to the liver )or stored in body fat. As THC is slowly released into the blood stream from the fat stores from there it is carried in the blood to the liver and metabolized into THC-COOH (9 -carboxy THC) (cocaine has 3 metabolites) and carried out in the urine. Drug screens test for both the drug and the metabolites. Passive contamination is not a concern as the THC in the smoke will not penetrate the hair cortex and metabolites are created in the body. About Hair follicle drug testing: The shaft is made up of three layers . The inner layer is the medulla, the next layer is the cortex and the outer layer is the cuticle. The cortex makes up the majority of the shaft and feeds the cuticle which is made up of tightly packed scales in an overlapping structure similar to roof shingles. The metabolites are deposited in the cortex layer as it feeds of the contaminated blood as it grown. The same metabolites are in your other body fluids such as sweat and sebum (the oils) in the scalp which soak into the hair .
