Nail Collection Procedure
- Prior to commencing the collection of nail specimens, the Collector should ensure they have the following tools and supplies readily available:
a. Nail clippers b. Clean and sharp scissors c. Alcohol swabs d. Non-acetone nail polish remover e. Nail Collection Kit f. Chain-of-Custody form (COC) g. Transport bag h. Courier/shipping envelope - The Collector must clean the nail clippers and scissors thoroughly by rubbing them with an alcohol swab, with the Donor present as an observer.
- The Donor's fingernails or toenails must be free of any polish, dirt, or debris. If the Donor has artificial nails, they should be removed prior to the test. It is important not to attempt removing artificial nails as it may cause damage to the nail bed. If nail polish needs to be removed, ensure the Donor washes their hands thoroughly to eliminate any nail polish remover residue. Non-acetone nail polish remover should be used.
- The Collector should clip the Donor's nails from all fingers or all toes onto a clean piece of paper. The nails should be clipped halfway across and then peeled the rest of the way to prevent the nail from "popping" off and getting lost or exposed to an unsterile environment.
- Using a clean pair of scissors, the Collector must gently scrape the surface of each nail to collect shavings. Hold the scissors at a 33-degree angle and scrape from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. Use quick scraping motions, being careful not to scrape too deeply to avoid injuring the Donor. The Collector should collect the nail shavings from the entire surface of all ten (10) fingernails or toenails, combining them with the nail clippings and placing them in the foil pouch provided in the Nail Collection Kit.
- Fold and seal the foil pouch securely around the nail sample, then place it inside the Nail Collection Kit.
- Request the Donor to print their full name, social security/I.D. number, and initials on the appropriate spaces provided on the flap of the Nail Collection Kit.
- Both the Donor and the Collector must initial the tamper-proof seal once it has been placed over the edge of the Nail Collection Kit.
- The Collector must complete the chain-of-custody (COC) form in its entirety, including the required information of both the Donor and the Collector. The COC form should indicate the specific toxicology test being performed on the nail specimen. The social security/I.D. number of the Donor must match on both the COC and the Nail Collection Kit envelope.
- Place the completed COC form and the sealed Nail Collection Kit into the plastic transport bag, and then seal them respectively in the provided courier envelope. Ensure each item is securely sealed and promptly ship it for testing.
